These Are The Best Ways to Save Money When Renting a Car

The holiday travel season is in full swing and more people are hitting the roads than ever, so if you haven't already reserved your own rental car, it's time to do so.

We've written before about why you should book your rental car early to lock in your rate, because you can (usually) cancel and rebook with no penalty if prices drop. But regardless of when you reserve and how rates fluctuate, there are a number of strategies for saving money on both base rates and fees (such as upcharges for young or additional drivers) when you book so you don't wind up blowing your whole travel budget on your rental car.

Shop around for the cheapest rate—and get creative about it

You should obviously compare prices across rental companies to get the cheapest option, especially if you aren't a member of any loyalty programs, and include rental car alternatives like Turo and Getaround. AutoSlash tracks rental car rates—for free—so you can set up an alert for your reservation.

But go one step further than just comparing companies. your rental company has multiple locations in your area—both in-town and at the airport, for example—check for price differences if you pick up and drop off at one versus another. Downtown pickup is cheaper on average than airport locations, according to NerdWallet. However, you should also factor in convenience (taking a rideshare to a location further away could offset any savings) and business hours, as well as available inventory and one-way fees if you pick up at one location and drop off at another.

Sign up for a membership club with an auto discount

AAA is perhaps the best-known auto club to offer car rental discounts, but there are a handful of membership programs with similar perks:

  • AARP: up to 30% off base rates

  • BJ's: up to 30% off base rates

  • Costco: up to 30% off base fares

  • USAA: up to 25% off

  • Sam's Club: up to 25% off

Each of the above contracts with certain rental car companies to offer discounts to their members, so if you prefer a specific provider, you should check the specifics before joining. Note that other than USAA (which offers membership only to military service members and their families), these clubs have fees to join that range from $12 to $110, and you may have to book your rental through the club's portal to take advantage of your discount.

But if you use this perk (and others) often, the money you save could quickly offset the price of admission.

Book with your travel credit card

As The Points Guy lays out, there are a handful of travel credit cards—the Chase Sapphire Reserve, The Platinum Card from American Express, and the United Club Infinite Card, for example—that have solid rental car benefits, such as discounts, waived fees, free upgrades, and priority service.

Another potential perk of using a travel credit card to book your rental is that insurance coverage such as damage waivers may be included, so you don't have to purchase costly coverage from the rental company or file a claim with your personal insurance in the event of a collision. (Obviously, you should check what's covered with your card before declining any additional insurance options.)

Go through your travel loyalty program

Hotel and airline loyalty program members may be able to score rental car discounts with partner companies and earn bonus points or miles on the booking. For example, Alaska Air offers 35% off Avis and Budget rentals and up to 1,250 miles for its Mileage Plan customers who use their membership number when booking, while Marriott has a partnership with Hertz to offer discounts to Bonvoy members.

If you use rental cars frequently and/or have a preference for a certain provider, you may want to consider joining their rewards program, which can earn you points that can be redeemed for rate discounts and upgrades.

Use your company or school perks

Ask your employer about a corporate code for rental car discounts (just be sure you understand any restrictions, such as using it for personal vs. business travel). Similarly, some universities have partnerships with rental companies to offer discounts and perks to students and alumni. Union members may also have access to car rental benefits through UnionPlus.

Note that you may have to show proof of employment, enrollment, or membership to qualify for your discount.

You Can Finally Change the iPhone's Default Notification Sounds and Haptics

The iPhone’s notification sound is iconic at this point. While you've had the option to change the alert sound for notifications like messages, incoming emails, and reminders, as well as certain third-party apps, Apple never let us change the default alert sound for other notifications. That chime is arguably almost as strong as the iPhone brand itself, much like the Windows XP Bliss wallpaper or the Mac boot up sound.

In any case, Apple finally letting go of that legacy, and we’re all better for it. In the fourth public beta for iOS 17.2, Apple added a brand new section for changing the default alerts sound. While the feature is currently in testing, the iOS 17.2 should be available for the general audience in a matter of weeks. If you’re curious, you can install the public beta, without even installing a new profile.

How to change the default alert tone on your iPhone

Once your iPhone is updated, go to Settings > Sounds & Haptics to find the brand new Default Alerts at the bottom of the list. Here, you can change the sound to any of the text tones, new or classic.

While you’re here, you might also want to change the default haptic feedback. iOS 17 changed the haptic alerts, and there was no way to go back. With the iOS 17.2 update, Apple is letting you customize the haptics as well, so you can go back to how it used to be, or choose the haptic feedback level that works best for you.

Use the Shaper System to Easily Recall up to 100 Things

Remembering things can be difficult, yes, but there are all kinds strategies to make it easier. One way is by using association, or creating links between unrelated, easy-to-recall concepts or items and the ones you’re struggling to remember. A more advanced version of that is called the Shaper System and once you master it, you can more easily recall up to 100 things.

What is the Shaper System?

The Shaper System was developed by Erol Ozvatan, author of How to Memorize: The Science & Art of Memorizing. The goal of the system is to convert two-digit numbers into shapes that help you make associations, going way above and beyond what the standard number association system of 0 - 9 covers.

Each number is supposed to look like something. For instance, a zero can be an egg, a three can be a butterfly, and a seven can be a boomerang. Ozvatan has created his own list of images to be associated with every number from 00 to 99; while these are great, go through the list and make sure you really see each of the images in their corresponding numbers. If you don’t, you can use your own image. The goal is to create images and associations that make sense for you

How to use the shapes in the Shaper System

Once you’ve figured out the shapes that work best for you (or think you have a good idea), try practicing with the Shaper System. Practice with a decently long list, like the US states in order of size. Imagine something like this:

  1. Alaska: If your 00 is represented by two eggs, imagine an ice fisherman eating two eggs.

  2. Texas: If your 01 is a plate and knife, imagine a Texan cutting into some barbecue on a plate.

  3. California: If your 02 is a swan, imagine it walking down Rodeo Drive.

  4. Montana: If your 03 is a rabbit, imagine the bunny admiring the glaciers.

  5. New Mexico: If your 04 is a chopping board and big knife, imagine Bigfoot using it to prepare a meal.

  6. Arizona: If your 05 is a lantern with a handle, imagine someone peering into the Grand Canyon with one, trying to illuminate all the crevices.

  7. Nevada: If your 06 is a golf ball and club, this one’s easy. Imagine someone at Topgolf in Vegas.

  8. Colorado: If your 07 is a megaphone, imagine someone skiing and yelling into one.

  9. Wyoming: If your 08 is a pool ball, imagine someone shooting pool in Jackson Hole.

  10. Oregon: If your 09 is a tennis ball and racket, imagine someone playing tennis in downtown Portland.

This can go on and on, but only works if you really commit your images and their associations with numbers to your mind first, so create your associations from 00 to 99 before tackling any big lists.

What to Do When You’re a Financial Late Bloomer

Many people find themselves behind financially in their 30s, 40s, or even later in life. Maybe you're a financial procrastinator, or you faced setbacks like job loss or health issues that hampered your earnings—or you simply didn’t make finances a priority in your youth. Regardless of the reason, there are steps you can take to improve your money situation, no matter your age.

Review your spending and budget

First, take an honest look at your current financial habits. Document everything you spend for a month. Look for areas where you can cut back, even in small ways. Use the data to make a realistic budget based on your income and essential costs. Having a budget is key to freeing up more to put toward your financial goals. To make your goals more actionable, look into budgeting apps or other tools to automate and remind you of key tasks and deadlines.

Start by rerouting some of your expenses. If you haven’t already, make a list of all the things you spend money on, and consider which non-essential expenses could go to your emergency fund instead.

Start small to build momentum

Tackle just one or two small financial tasks that you’ve been putting off. Build the habit of acting right away on manageable tasks. Getting down on yourself for your money habits can backfire in the form of fear-based decision-making. It can help to zoom out and celebrate your personal finance strengths so you have the confidence to keep making smarter financial decisions down the line. Small wins add up, and you may find your finances aren’t as bad as you think.

Tackle credit card and high interest debt

Next, make a debt payoff plan. List all debts by interest rate and focus on eliminating high rate credit card balances first before moving onto lower rate debts (like cars or student loans). Consider consolidating debts to lower rates where possible. And you should always aim pay off your statement balance in full and on time.

When it comes, specifically, to getting out of debt, you don’t want to live in fear and stay in the dark. Here’s our guide to getting organized enough to pay off your debt.

Focus on saving—even small amounts count

Failure to save and invest early on can mean losing out on years of potential compound growth. Begin saving whatever you can each month. Even $20 or $50 a month is a start towards building saving. Sign up for a high yield online savings account and set up automated transfers from your checking account monthly. Having a dedicated savings makes it easier to leave the money alone and watch it grow with compound interest over time.

Meet with a financial advisor

Consult an advisor like a fee-only certified financial planner to review your unique situation and map out a specific plan toward your monetary goals. An outside expert perspective can help you identify blindspots as well as provide accountability on follow through. Seek second opinions if needed until you have a workable roadmap. Here’s our guide to hiring a financial advisor who won’t rip you off.

Consider ways to increase income

Finally, explore options for increasing your income streams to have more money to put towards debt repayment and reaching future financial aims. Take on freelance work in your off hours, look for a higher paying job, negotiate a raise at your current job, or pick up extra shifts. The more you can dedicate toward financial priorities now, the faster you can exit the late bloomer category for good.

The key is to not get discouraged, but instead get to work mapping out a comeback plan. Regardless of your current financial standing, implementing budgetary discipline, making smart repayment and savings choices, and increasing earnings can all help you gain considerable financial ground—even later in life. For more, check out these steps to start healing your relationship with money.

You Can Finally Scan Documents in Google Drive for iPhone

Google Drive is a solid solution for storing important files across your devices. But if you're an iPhone user, you've been missing out on a key feature Android users have had for years: document scanning.

This simple integration makes it much easier to quickly add important documents to your Google Drive. It's something Apple offers with its own Notes app, but Google was reluctant to add to Drive's iOS version. A workaround, of course, it to scan your documents using the Notes app, save it to your photos library, then add it to Drive, but that adds a series of cumbersome steps Android users don't need to worry about.

Native document scanning is also much more convenient than simply taking a photo of the paper: Document scanners automatically crop the image so only the document itself appears and attempts to reproduce the elements of the page the same as a traditional scanner would.

Thankfully, those days are behind us. Google finally added document scanning to Drive on iOS. Now, iPhone users can add documents like receipts, bills, and notices to their Drive just as Android users can. It comes with an update to Drive that sees a few new features across platforms, but more on that in a bit.

How to scan documents in Google Drive

Whether you have an iPhone or an Android, scanning and uploading a document to Drive is easy. To start, open the app and select the Camera icon in the bottom right. (Alternatively, you can tap the (+), then hit Scan.)

Next, frame the camera view over your document. The app will intelligently scan the paper so only the document will be scanned. Tap the shutter button at the bottom of the display when ready to capture.

According to Google, this feature may take one to three days to fully roll out on iOS (I don't see it on my end as of this morning), so keep an eye out if it isn't available in your app yet.

What else is new with Google Drive

While document scanning is the big new feature on iOS, Android users can expect some additional features in Google Drive. Going forward, Drive can automatically capture documents when it detects them, so there's no need to hit the shutter button, unless you prefer to do so manually.

There's now an improved camera viewfinder to help you position the frame to get the best scan possible for your document. You can also import docs from your camera roll, and there's now a way to initialize a scan faster using a new scanner button.

There's a Faster New Way to Send Photos in iMessage

iOS 17 changed the way you access Photos from the Messages app—a change that has, unfortunately, slowed down the process of sending images and videos. As it turns out, however, you don't need to use the cumbersome default method. Instead, try this hack discovered by Reddit user Smiley-v2

Send images quickly in iMessage

To quickly send photos and videos, don't press the (+), then hit the Photos. That's too slow. Instead, open the Messages app, tap and hold the + button, and keep it held until you see the photo gallery replace your keyboard. Select the images or videos you want to send, and fire them away in your iMessage chats.

Reorganize your iMessage app shortcuts

The Messages app in iOS 17 shows a few app shortcuts when you tap the + button in any of your chats. Only the top five shortcuts are shown here, however: You need to tap More to see the rest. The good news is that you can reorganize these shortcuts to prioritize the ones you actually use. Just tap and hold any of these shortcuts, and drag them up or down. If you drag them to the bottom, they go into the More section and are removed from the list of shortcuts that show up when you hit the + button. You can also open the More section and drag any of the apps there to the top.

Quickly delete unwanted iMessage apps

iOS 17 also has a neat settings page for you to remove iMessage apps you no longer use. This reduces the number of items that show up in Messages and allows you to retain only the ones you use. To trim this list, go to Settings > Messages > iMessage Apps. In the Only in Messages section, tap the red - button next to any app, and press Delete twice to remove it. Scroll down to the Included with an app section and flip the switches on the right to disable the iMessage apps you don't use.

How to Download Instagram Reels (and Stop Others From Downloading Yours)

Instagram finally allows you to download reels from public accounts now. But of course, there's a catch: You won't always be able to download reels with audio (due to licensing issues), and all of your downloaded reels will have an annoying moving watermark. But assuming the reel doesn't have copyrighted audio attached, you'll be able to enjoy your favorite Instagram videos without using the app first.

This feature is enabled by default, but you can stop people from downloading your reels if you want.

How to download Instagram reels

The download process itself is pretty simple. Go to any public Instagram account on your Instagram app and open a reel. Tap Share, then Download near the bottom of the screen. You may see a pop-up telling you the reel will be downloaded without audio, but otherwise, the download should begin immediately. When the process is complete, you'll find the Instagram reel saved in your phone's photo library.

It's worth noting that older reels cannot be downloaded using this feature. You'll only be able to download reels that were posted after Instagram enabled downloads.

Stop people from downloading your reels

Instagram allows you to stop people from downloading your reels, too. Once you've completed recording and editing your reel on the Instagram app, navigate to More options > Advanced settings, then disable Allow people to download your reels.

You can also turn your Instagram account private to stop others from saving your reels, but if you like keeping a public account, that's likely a step too far.

Download Instagram reels without watermarks

If Instagram's official download feature's restrictions are dealbreakers for you, there are alternative ways to get the job done. We've got you covered with all the easiest ways to download Instagram reels without watermarks and with the music. On your iPhone, you can use the Shortcuts app paired with the Instagram Download shortcut, while on Android, you can use a third-party app.

Here Are All the Ways to 'Ping' a Lost iPhone

If you're reading this article, chances are you've lost your iPhone and googled in search of help. I feel your pain. You don't know whether you left it at the restaurant after dinner, whether it was stolen, or whether it's hiding between your couch cushions. Worse yet, if your iPhone is set to silent, you can't even call it to find it. There is a way to force it to make noise, though, no matter what settings are enabled: You just need to ping it.

What does it mean to “ping” an iPhone?

Depending on how involved you are with iPhones and Apple products, you may or may not be familiar with “pinging.” It's not Apple’s failed attempt to turn iTunes into a social media platform (yes, that really happened). I'm talking about making your iPhone play a high-pitched tone, no matter where it happens to be.

Pinging is undoubtedly responsible for reuniting many an iPhone owner with their $1,000 lifeline to the rest of the world. It’s the perfect tool for finding iPhones lost under cushions and car seats, as well as on the movie theater floor. (Please wait until after the movie is over to ping your phone.)

Pinging is the preferred method for finding a missing iPhone in your immediate area because it doesn’t matter if the phone is on silent or not. Calling the iPhone certainly works well if your sound is all the way up, but without that ringtone blaring away, your phone calls will be in vain.

Plus, we don’t always have access to another phone to call ours in these types of emergencies. Unless you’re with a friend, or you have the nerve to ask a stranger to use theirs, you can’t call your phone without your phone. So, pinging it is.

Apple makes it easy for those in the Apple ecosystem to ping their iPhones. In fact, it offers three different methods for doing so. Check out all three below, and pick one the next time your iPhone goes missing.

How to ping an iPhone using Find My

The Find My app isn’t just good for pinging iPhones. Since it tracks the location of many of your Apple products, you can likely see the phone on the map as well. After jumping into Find My, you might be able to tell where the phone is without needing to ping it at all. However, if you already know your iPhone is in your house, you just don’t know where, that’s where pinging comes in handy.

If you have an Apple device connected to the same Apple ID as your iPhone, you can launch Find My there. Just search for "Find My" on either your Mac or iPad to open the app. If you don't have a connected Apple device with you, you can log in to icloud.com and choose Find My from here. Either way, choose your iPhone from the list, and tap “Play Sound” to ping it. At first, your iPhone will simply vibrate. After a few seconds, however, it will begin to play a high-pitched sound. This sound will continue to play until your iPhone is found—or you stop the sound through Find My—so keep that in mind.

How to ping an iPhone with your Apple Watch

If you have an Apple Watch, you can use it to ping your iPhone. It’s certainly much faster to tap a button on your watch instead of reaching for Find My, so, if you have one of Apple’s wearables, I recommend you use it first.

The option to ping your iPhone lives in your Apple Watch’s Control Center. To access it, press the side button on your watch. (If running an older version of watchOS, swipe up from the bottom of your watch face). Either way, tap the button that features an iPhone with sound waves. This will ping the iPhone, but only for a few seconds, unlike Find My’s never-ending ping.

There’s a hidden feature to this Apple Watch button, though. If you hold it down instead of tapping it, your iPhone’s LED will flash, as well. That way, if its speaker is a bit muffled, you can also rely on the flash to help locate your phone.

How to ping an iPhone using Siri

If you don’t have an Apple Watch, Siri is another quick way to find a lost iPhone (or anything, really). Just fire up Siri on one of your connected Apple devices, and ask it to find the device you’re looking for. For example, you could ask Siri on your Mac to ping your iPhone, or you could ask your iPad to ping your Mac.

How to Get a Sale Price on an Item You've Already Bought

So, you bought an item on your wishlist. Maybe you even got it on sale. But shortly thereafter, the exact same product at the exact same retailer is cheaper than when you bought it. If only you had known.

Luckily, that pain you feel in your wallet doesn't have to be the end of the road. With a little research (and some cleverness, when necessary) you can probably get that money back.

Check the store's price protection policies

A handful of retailers offer price adjustment—also referred to as price protection or a price guarantee—which will refund you the difference between what you paid at the time of purchase and the sale price. This policy will apply only within a limited timeframe after a purchase, typically anywhere from 14 to 30 days.

Keep in mind that price adjustment is different from price matching. The latter refers to a policy in which a retailer will match a lower price offered by a competitor on an identical item. This is usually only available before you make a purchase, though you can still use this to your advantage to shop around for the best deal.

Note that the list of retailers that offer these benefits is short and does not include Amazon. Best Buy, Bed Bath & Beyond, Target, and Costco are a few of the major retailers that have some kind of pricing policy.

However, price protection and price matching are likely to come with significant restrictions and exclusions. For example, price matching may be limited to a few select competitors, and some retailers may not offer it at all during major sale seasons like Black Friday, Cyber Week, and Memorial Day. As Wirecutter notes, even finding the fine print can be difficult, much less taking advantage of it.

While credit card issuers used to offer price protection—allowing you to submit a claim for a partial refund without going through the retailer—that benefit is practically extinct unless you hold one of a few select cards.

Bargain with customer service

If a retailer doesn't have a published price protection policy (or if they do, and it doesn't seem to apply to you), it doesn't hurt to reach out to customer service and ask if they can help. Consumer Reports found that even Amazon may budge when contacted directly. But this may work with smaller retailers in addition to big-box stores as long as you're within the return window. Note that you may have to settle for store credit, which only makes sense if you plan to shop with the retailer in the future.

Return and repurchase

If none of the above gets you the savings you want, consider returning the item for a refund and buying it again at a lower price (again, this is probably the best option for Amazon purchases).

A few things to consider to maximize your refund:

  • Are you within the return window?

  • Do you still have the receipt or confirmation?

  • Does the item meet return criteria for being unworn, unused, unwashed, in its original packaging, etc.?

  • Does the retailer offer refunds to the original payment method or store credit only?

  • Does the retailer offer free returns, or will you pay for shipping?

  • Is there a nearby brick-and-mortar location where you can bring the returns?

Obviously, you must be within the return window to get a refund (unless you used a credit card that has extended return benefits that apply even if the retailer's window has passed). Some retailers will accept returns for longer during the holiday season, and it's good practice to check return policies before you buy anyway.

If you have your receipt and can get back every dollar you paid (ideally without having to pay anything for return shipping or restocking), then it may make sense to return your original item and buy it again on sale. But if there are limitations, such as getting store credit, being refunded at the current sale price, or paying a premium to send the item back, consider whether you'll really save anything in the end.

With major streaming content providers rolling out bargain prices for their movies and TV shows, it's a good time to pick up a new device to actually do the streaming. There are a ton of devices out there that will hook up to your TV and let you watch Netflix, YouTube, etc., and the shopping holiday deals have made them extremely affordable. I'm talking "fewer than 20 bucks" affordable.

Here are our picks for best Black Friday streaming device deals.

Amazon Fire devices

Amazon is offering Black Friday deals on its Fire line of streaming devices, and there's something for every budget. Each of these devices comes with six months of MGM+ for free.

If you pay for MGM+ already, you should buy this even if you already have a streaming device: MGM+ is $49.99 a year, so you'd be saving money even if you never use the Stick at all.

  • Amazon Fire TV Stick: A step up from the "lite" version, this devices streams in full HD. You can watch endless hours of content and stream music too for $19.99, half-off its regular price. It also comes with MGM+ for six months, so the above sneaky savings still apply.

  • Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K Max: Along with the music and movie streaming and support for Wi-Fi 6E, the 4K Max comes with "Ambient Experience" that "lets you display over 2,000 pieces of museum-quality art and photography." Cool, I guess. The Max costs $39.99, marked down from $59.99,

TikTok Myth of the Week: Vegetables Are Bad for You

In the wellness world, things you’ve already heard are boring. Why would you want to hear yet another person tell you something you’ve heard a million times: that almost any exercise can be good, that a healthy diet includes a variety of foods including vegetables, and so on? It’s much more interesting to watch somebody tell you secrets that mainstream medicine doesn’t want you to know.

On TikTok, a bunch of (mostly) white (mostly) dudes proudly announce they don’t eat their vegetables, and you shouldn’t either. Ready to dig in?

Why TikTokers say vegetables are bad for you

Here is a little story that has a few grains of truth to it. Vegetables are plants, specifically the roots, stems, leaves, and (arguably) seeds of those plants. Plants don’t want to be eaten. So they make toxic compounds, the better to kill off anyone who tries to eat them–including you.

This talking point is parroted from video to video, and the TikToker usually follows it up with examples of specific toxins, health conditions, and vegetables that you must avoid if you want to be healthy. Sometimes they will also use the term “anti-nutrients,” a category that does not necessarily overlap with those toxins, but we’ll get to specifics in a bit.

(The TikTokers tend to forget that any relationship between an eater and an eat-ee, in nature, is an arms race. The plant evolves a toxin; the plant-eater evolves resistance to that toxin. Have they never planted a garden and watched it feed all the neighborhood insects, slugs, and squirrels? Do they think we are more fragile than insects, slugs, and squirrels? I have so many questions.)

Sometimes there will be an acknowledgement that “some” people can eat vegetables and be healthy, but that anybody whose health is imperfect should simply stop eating most or all veggies. Fruits are sometimes demonized as well, although there are also TikTokers who say they will eat fruits but not vegetables.

Are vegetables actually bad for you?

What? No! Of course not! Mountains of scientific evidence back up the idea that the more vegetables you eat, the better.

These studies have their drawbacks, as all studies do: they are mainly observational, and they combine many types of vegetables and different ways of measuring them. But even so, the results consistently and overwhelmingly point to vegetables reducing our risk of many health conditions.

For example, a 2022 study designed to evaluate the evidence behind vegetable recommendations found that eating about 12 ounces of vegetables per day, compared to eating none, reduces the risk of strokes, coronary heart disease, and esophageal cancer. This 2008 study found that people who eat at least three servings of vegetables a day reduce their risk of coronary heart disease by 70%. (There was also a 60% reduction from five servings of fruit.)

And this 2017 meta-analysis found that the more fruits and vegetables you eat, the lower your risk of the above chronic diseases and cardiovascular disease, cancer, and all-cause mortality. The more fruits and vegetables people eat, the better, they found, up to about 600 grams for cancer prevention and 800 grams for everything else. To put that in real-world terms, 800 grams of vegetables is 28 ounces, or about five to seven servings of fruits and veggies per day.

So what’s the deal with these supposed toxins and anti-nutrients?

Two things are true at the same time: yes, there are toxins and anti-nutrients in vegetables. And, they are not harmful enough to matter to us in normal quantities and with normal food preparation techniques.

As the above studies on vegetables and health show, the good outweighs the bad. People don’t get sicker the more vegetables they eat; they are healthier. You don’t need to dig into the specifics of what lectins or sulforaphanes or tannins do to our body to know that the big-picture answer is that we should be eating our veggies.

But I know you want to hear the details, so let’s take a look at a few of the big names in anti-vegetables TikTok.

Lectins

Lectins are plant proteins that bind to carbohydrates. They can prevent absorption of some nutrients, and can sometimes cause gastrointestinal illness. For example, there are dozens of case reports of people developing vomiting and diarrhea from lectin poisoning after eating undercooked kidney beans. This is why it’s important to boil your beans for 10 minutes, instead of simply soaking and slow cooking. (Canned beans have already been cooked enough to destroy the lectins.)

As Harvard’s Nutrition Source explains, “It is important to remember that eating foods with a high amount of active lectins is rare.” Cooking destroys or significantly reduces the lectin content in foods. It’s unlikely that you’re even getting much lectin content in your food at all.

The TikTokers who say that lectins can cause gastrointestinal issues aren’t speaking from clinical evidence; aside from cases where people overdosed on lectins (like the kidney bean poisoning), most of our evidence is from studies that don’t involve humans or the kinds of vegetables humans routinely eat. Is it possible that some people are sensitive to the effects of certain lectins? Sure. But are lectins found in vegetables ruining our health in any kind of universal or widespread way? It’s pretty clear they are not.

Lectins also have their upsides: they are antioxidants, and can also slow the absorption of carbohydrates, potentially helping to avoid blood sugar spikes after eating. Foods that contain lectins include legumes (beans, lentils) and whole grains. These foods contain fiber, vitamins, and other healthful components, and there’s plenty of evidence that overall, these foods are good for us.

Oxalates

We’ve long known that it’s bad to eat large doses of foods that are high in oxalates or oxalic acid; that’s why, when you buy rhubarb at the grocery store, the red stalks don’t come with leaves attached. Rhubarb leaves are notoriously high in oxalates. Other vegetables, mainly leafy greens like spinach (but also potatoes!), contain oxalates in smaller amounts.

But, again, most of our grocery-store vegetables don’t contain enough oxalates to be a health issue. Cooking reduces the oxalate content further. If you have a history of oxalate-containing kidney stones, the American Urological Association suggests that you might want to limit high-oxalate vegetables. (Not avoid them entirely, as TikTokers would suggest, but simply enjoy them in small doses.)

You see how the risks sound a lot different when you listen to TikTok rants versus getting your information from medical sources. TikTok told me that oxalates cause kidney stones and kidney failure; Colorado State University’s nutrition center told me that the oxalate in most kidney stones is manufactured by the body itself, that drinking plenty of water is the best nutrition-based tip for avoiding kidney stones, and that “it is recommended to include many oxalate-containing plant foods in the diet as evidence suggests that these foods play a vital role in disease prevention.”

Toxic reactions to vegetables look pretty different than what TikTok wants us to believe

The sweet spot for TikTokers, medically speaking, is when you feel kind of yucky and aren’t sure why. Then you’ll try their diet, or their supplements, or at least keep watching their content and boosting their engagement metrics.

In reality, there are plenty of opportunities for us to have bad reactions to toxic compounds in vegetables, with dramatic results that would lead you to seek immediate medical attention–and this is exactly why the FDA, the WHO, and other organizations warn against exposing ourselves to the dangerous ones. They want us to be sure that we fully cook our kidney beans, that we don’t eat rhubarb leaves, that we avoid honey made from mountain laurel and rhododendron flowers, and that we don’t eat peach pits or apple seeds. (Re: the latter, “accidentally eating a seed or pit will not harm you,” but please don’t eat them in large amounts.)

TikTokers can, of course, attempt to weaponize this information to scare us away from perfectly harmless vegetables. For example, one video states that celery is poison because it contains an acid that makes you susceptible to sunburn. The part about sunburn is true! (The part about poison is not.) Celery juice can sensitize your skin to UV exposure; so can lime juice, causing the reaction nicknamed “margarita hand.” A woman developed a severe reaction when she ate an entire pound of celery before heading to the tanning salon. This does not mean you need to avoid celery entirely.

Nor should you believe the videos from a sea moss supplement company that say celery’s acidic pH indicates it is man-made and not from nature (huh?) or that broccoli gets stuck in our digestive system for up to 4 weeks if we do not purchase sea moss supplements. (This is the 100-year-old “your guts are full of stuck poop” myth all over again.)

Meanwhile, many of the compounds that TikTokers demonize–including tannins, sulforaphanes, and glycoalkaloids–seem to have beneficial effects as well as potentially harmful ones. Here’s an article from the M. D. Anderson Cancer Center recommending that we seek out cruciferous vegetables specifically for their sulforaphane content.

In conclusion, vegetables are still good for us, no matter what TikTok says. I won’t make you eat them–I’m not your mom–but please don’t believe the online fearmongering.

‘Batch’ Your Cocktails for Holiday Hosting Success

We’re wading into the deep waters of the holiday season now. While I like to offer up food ideas for easy party planning, I think we need to address an equally important player: beverages. As a person who loves hosting holiday parties, one of the biggest ways I help myself is by batching cocktails. It saves time, mess, and stress. I’d love for you to have more time for mingling and less time spent mixing, so use this batching tip guide to prepare your holiday cocktails and mocktails in advance.

Batching is a host's best friend

The concept is simple: Batched cocktails are simply large batches of pre-mixed drinks without the ice. Many cocktail recipes are ratios, or they have measurements that are easily multiplied. Which means that, depending on the concoction, you can pour large quantities of the ingredients together and store the mixture in the fridge or freezer for hours or days before you need it. Once it’s party time, your theme drink simply needs its final preparation. Often that step is only as complicated as pouring it over ice.

Batching ahead of time means that he day of the festivities, you get more time to focus on plating charcuterie boards, answering the doorbell, or actually eating your own snacks and talking to people who you like. Be sure to let your guests know where the batch is so they can help themselves. This allows them to be more independent and embrace the “make yourself at home” holiday vibe.

Now that you understand the rewards of batching, here are a few tips to get you on the pathway to success.

Choose the right cocktail

Not every cocktail is going to keep well in the fridge or freezer, so you have to be discerning when doing your research. Cocktails that are high in alcohol work well for batching, like martinis, a negroni, a Long Island iced tea, a sazerac, or a paper plane. These drinks have little juice or non-alcoholic components which means they’ll store well without losing flavor. Keep in mind particularly for a martini, that unless you’re planning on stirring or shaking the cocktail with ice just before serving it “up,” you’ll need to dilute it to account for that missing step. Here's a ratio for properly diluting your bottled martini.

Carefully consider drinks that are largely sparkling wine, soda, or tonic (basically anything bubbly). They’re going to lose all of their festive fizz while sitting in the fridge. That doesn’t mean you can’t have a sparkling topper. To make the most of batching, choose a beverage that has a base you can prepare in advance, a Long Island iced tea for example, and then add the sparkling topper (Coca-Cola here) to each glass as needed. Pour the base into a cup over ice (if using), and top with the appropriate fizzy drink. You’ll need to let guests know about this step and leave the soda, tonic, or champagne available for them, and even if you have to top the drinks for people yourself this is still much faster than mixing each one individually from scratch.

Save the egg-white-dependent, cream-foamed, and muddled drinks and make those to-order. These drinks look and taste best right after being prepared.

How much should you batch?

I very proudly made a large batched cocktail once. Two hours into the festivities it had clean run out. Of course, I had stocked my home bar for folk to rummage through, but I was hoping the clever browned butter-washed whiskey cocktail would be a mainstay throughout the evening. I had grossly underestimated how much to batch.

In times like these, it’s better to do some math. Get a headcount that’s as accurate as possible, and account for four servings per guest for a four hour party. Some guests won’t have the cocktail, some will have fewer than four and a few will have more, but this calculation should land you close to an appropriate batch. Obviously, if you know two friends will only drink wine then you can subtract those servings. If you have 10 people likely to partake, you’ll need 40 servings of the batch.

Use the number of servings to help you calculate the amount you need for each component. This will help you shop for ingredients. If your recipe requires two ounces of gin per serving, you’ll need 80 ounces of gin. Most liquor bottles are in milliliters, so you’ll need to do some quick internet converting from ounces. Since a handle of alcohol is usually 1.75 liters, you’ll need a handle plus a normal 750 milliliter bottle of gin. (No one said batching was cheap. Mocktail anyone?)

How to store it

Store your beautifully batched cocktails in pitchers or large bottles that have secure lids. I like these swing-top glass bottles, they’re small enough to fit comfortably in the fridge or freezer, yet large enough to hold several servings. The small opening makes it easier to pour without making a mess (especially if your friends are getting tipsy), and this particular set comes with a handy collapsible funnel if you don’t already have one. Use your ounce calculation from earlier to help you decide how many bottles you need.

Where to store it

The two best places to store your batched cocktails are the fridge or the freezer, mostly because a cold drink is a better drink, but also because juices, and other ingredients that might oxidize at room temperature (like vermouth), will have a longer life in the fridge. Longer life means you can batch one day or even a week ahead of time. If the cocktail or mocktail you mixed includes freshly squeezed juices as a primary ingredient, consider mixing the batch the day of, or the night before. The juices won’t “go bad,” but they can lose some of their flavor.

Store any batches that are high in alcohol content (about 30% ABV or higher) in the freezer. They won’t freeze in a conventional home freezer, and at most they could become slushy. (Here is an ABV calculator for cocktails, which can be handy for multiple reasons.) Drinks with dairy ingredients, like milk or cream, should be stored in the fridge just in case. If those become slushy, the texture of the dairy ingredient might change after thawing.

When the party starts, simply perform the final steps: Iced cocktails get poured over ice, while drinks served “up” are either already properly diluted or you’ll have to pour the concentrate into a shaker to shake or stir before straining. Maybe all you have to do is top off the batched mix with Champagne. Grab your own, and bask in the warm glow of the holiday season.
